Being an independent musician has never been easier than it is today. With the rise of social media and at-home music production technology, artists no longer need to go through a record label to get their music to a wide audience. However, if you are currently going it alone, that means everything is on you, including marketing.
Freelance musician Peter Abbonizio works as a digital music consultant, helping independent artists self-publish and promote their work online. Today he shares 4 tips you can use to promote your music online.
- Make a website for you and your work. Creating your own website allows you to have a sense of professionalism. If people search for you, they can go to your website to find out more about who you are as an artist, information on upcoming shows, and where to listen to your music.
- Publish your music on streaming platforms such as Spotify, SoundCloud, or Bandcamp. Everyone is streaming their music these days because it is so convenient. Plus, some of these streaming apps have features that allow listeners to discover new music, which could be yours.
- Make short-form video content. This can be as simple as a video of yourself playing your new song. If you have a creative flair for video creation, you can even create some of your own music videos! Apps like TikTok are great for emerging artists to be discovered. You can also upload the content to YouTube, Instagram, etc.
- Create an email list on your website. That way, people can stay up to date with your work and you can keep your fans engaged with new content that is delivered straight to their inboxes.
